Swimmer

A body and a wave, cast in concrete. Swimmer finds stillness within motion, a collaboration between architect / artist Shaumyika Sharma and Concrete Studio, exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea.

Two abstract concrete sculptures, one a curved yellow figure suggesting a swimmer’s body, the other a pale blue wave form, positioned on the sand at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia.

A collaboration with architect and artist Shaumyika Sharma.

On the shore at Cottesloe, two concrete forms rest in the sand, one yellow, one blue.
A curve, a body, a wave.
Together they become Swimmer.

Conceived by architect / artist Shaumyika Sharma and brought to life in collaboration with Concrete Studio, the work explores balance, motion, and stillness, the tension between body and water, gravity and grace.

The two forms were handcrafted in our Fremantle studio using our lightweight GFRC concrete, shaped to echo one another: the gentle undulation of a wave mirrored by the human form at rest beside it. Placed against the Indian Ocean, Swimmer finds harmony between material and landscape, between the permanence of the form and the shifting rhythm of the sea.

Exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2024, (1–18 March 2024) at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia, the work was part of the event’s 20th anniversary, joining over seventy sculptures from 14 artists around the world.

For us, this collaboration was more than fabrication. It was a shared process, an artist’s idea translated through craft, made solid through trust and experimentation.

Swimmer stands as a quiet study in movement, form, and connection a reminder of how concrete can carry both weight and lightness in the same breath.
