Up to Our Necks

Three abstract concrete heads rest in the sand, playful yet weighty. Up to Our Necks, by architect / artist Shaumyika Sharma, explores lightness and overwhelm in equal measure.

Three abstract concrete heads — one white, one mid-grey, one dark grey — partially embedded in the sand at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia.

Three abstract concrete heads sit quietly in the sand.
Simple forms with weight and presence.

Together, they form Up to Our Necks, a work by architect / artist Shaumyika Sharma, brought to life in collaboration with Concrete Studio for Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2023.

The piece draws on childhood memories of being buried in sand — moments of play and lightness, while also reflecting the feeling of being overwhelmed in today’s world. Balancing humour with honesty, Up to Our Necks invites both interpretations at once.

Fabricated in our Fremantle studio the three heads stand as variations on a theme - equal in form, yet distinct in tone. Each captures a different emotional register, from serenity to strain, quietly echoing the duality of the title.

Up to Our Necks reminds us how material and meaning can meet - concrete holding both playfulness and depth in the same breath.
